Breeding Pixie Bobs

Pixie Bobs are bred to look like the North American Bobcat.

If you are thinking of breeding Pixie Bobs, and are not already experienced as a breeder, please consider the following:

Breeding Pixie Bobs is expensive, and if you do it responsibly (ie good vetinary care, top quality food, good breeding animals and limited litters for each queen) you are unlikely to make money. Hopefully though, you should cover all your costs, including web site management, advertising, show fees etc.

Keeping an intact male can be hard, especially when they start to spray. A spraying male needs his own quarters, and will need a good outside kennel and run. If you don't want to keep an intact male, and only have a queen or two, you then have to consider where you will get stud services. Because of the danger of infections, most reputable breeders do not offer their studs to the public, and you may have difficulty, and a lot of extra costs, to find stud services from a suitable male.

It takes a lot of time: looking after several litter trays, and spending lots of time with kittens to socialise them is fun, but cannot be done in haste.

You also need to think about holidays - you will need someone responsible and reliable to look after all your animals when you want to get away.

The other danger is that you get hooked, like we all do, and then we buy 3 or 4 breeding females. If you want to develop your lines, you'll need 2 males at least, and ideally, new blood every year, for obvious reasons. That is a lot of outlay.

Last but not least, will you be able to place your kittens into good homes? Are you willing to give health guarantees and accept cats back if there is a problem?

Anyway, on the positive side, I just adore having the kittens around and I adore all my breeding animals. Each time a litter is due, I can't wait to see if I'm getting closer to my ideal cat!
